Abstract:
For some time now we have been traversing a terrain of artistic activity,
which is defined not by its products, art objects, but by interrogation
and engagement in a set of relations operating within different economies.
At the core of this activity has been a clear need to not only address
a familiar set of assumptions as to what constitutes artistic practice.
As a result we have been less interested in struggling to produce the
objects designated as art.
The shift is one from the emphasis on production, which defines the outcome
as a particular thing, be it painting, photograph, video piece, installation
to the formulation of practice and the underlying interests surrounding
that practice. In that way attention shifts from object to discourse,
and from product to the context and conditions of production and reception.
